Website or Google Business Profile - which should a contractor do first?

Both matter, but they are not equal in speed or cost. Here is the right order for a plumber or roofer starting from scratch.

A contractor starting from nothing online faces a fair question: build the website first, or set up the Google Business Profile first? They serve different purposes and they are not equal in speed, cost, or immediate payoff. Doing them in the right order means getting calls sooner.

The short answer

Do the Google Business Profile first. It is free, fast, and often produces calls within weeks. Then build the website, which takes longer to rank but does things the profile cannot. This is not either/or - it is a sequence.

Why the profile comes first

  1. It is free. No reason to delay something with no cost.
  2. It is fast. A complete, verified profile can appear in the map pack within weeks - far faster than a new site ranks.
  3. It captures "near me" calls. The immediate, high-intent searches go to the map pack, where your profile lives.
  4. It is the foundation everything else builds on. Reviews, photos, and local signals accumulate on the profile over time.

Why you still need the website

The profile cannot do everything:

  • It does not rank for specific service searches the way service pages do.
  • It cannot fully convert a homeowner comparing several thousand dollars of roofing work - that needs a credible site with proof.
  • It is rented land - Google controls it. The website is the asset you own.
  • It cannot capture searches in the regular results below the map.

The right sequence

  1. Claim and complete the Google Business Profile - this week, free.
  2. Start collecting reviews on every job.
  3. Build the website with service and town pages, structured to rank and convert.
  4. Link them together so the profile and site reinforce each other.
  5. Layer on paid ads only once the free foundation converts.

The mistake to avoid

Doing only one. The profile alone leaves you invisible for specific searches and entirely dependent on Google's rules. The website alone misses the fast, free map-pack calls. They work together - the profile wins the immediate call, the site wins the comparison shopper and the specific search, and it is the thing you actually own. Set up the free profile first, then build the site it points to. We handle that second half, structured to back up everything the profile promises.
